Angelica McKinley - Board Member
Angelica McKinley is a creative leader who thrives at the intersection of narrative, visual storytelling and technology. Most recently, she’s expanded art direction and visual expression on the world’s most visited website through highly impactful, emotionally resonant iterations of Google’s logo that centered globally diverse artists, cultural nuance and nostalgia (see the 155th Anniversary of Juneteenth Doodle). Before becoming the second Art Director ever hired on the Doodles team, Angelica was a product and content designer on Apple News. She worked on a range of visual concepts and user experience projects to launch the app’s immersive magazine and news reading experience.
In 2017, she was a founding member of Slack’s brand design team where she partnered heavily with engineering, customer acquisition and external agencies to redesign Slack.com and translate/localize it into French, Spanish, German and Japanese. In addition, she led weekly stand ups, prioritized workloads and developed best practices for junior to mid level designers focused on the digital side of branding. Before transitioning into the tech industry, Angelica spent 10 years working as an editorial art director, designer and consultant on products for news organizations such as The New York Times, The Pulitzer Prizes and Gannett.
During a six year stint at the New York Times, she received several Society of News Design and Online News Association awards for her print and digital projects. She was also a founding visual leader on Race Related, design mentor for the NYT Student Journalism program, and wrote articles about Black activist artwork and the female gaze in fashion photography. Angelica is a proud graduate of Hampton University, a historically black college and university in Virginia, and has been a vocal advocate for diversity in design and illustration throughout her career.
